Rekeying Your Algorand Account — When and Why

What is Rekeying?

Rekeying is a feature unique to Algorand that lets you assign a new private key to an existing account — without transferring your assets. Your address stays the same, your balances stay the same, but the key that authorizes transactions changes.

Think of it like changing the locks on your house. Same house, same address, new key.

When Should You Rekey?

Your passphrase may be compromised

If you think someone else has seen or accessed your recovery passphrase — even if you're not sure — rekeying lets you secure the account immediately without having to move everything to a new address.

You want hardware wallet security on an existing account

You can rekey a standard Pera account to a Ledger device. After rekeying, all transactions must be approved on the Ledger — adding hardware-level security to an address you've been using.

You have locked or committed assets

If you have assets in smart contracts, liquidity pools, or other positions tied to your current address, moving them might be costly, time-consuming, or impossible. Rekeying secures the account without touching the assets.

You're upgrading your security setup

Moving from a standard account to a hardware-secured one, or from one Ledger to a newer model — rekeying handles it cleanly.

How to Connect and Use Ledger Nano X, S and S+ with Pera Web Wallet

Pera Web Wallet supports accounts backed by a Ledger Nano hardware wallet. Pera Web supports all models of the Ledger Nano:

Ledger Nano X can be connected via USB or Bluetooth (on Bluetooth-supported browsers)
Ledger Nano S and S+ can be connected via USB
Ledger devices can only be connected via chromium browsers such as Google Chrome, Brave, Edge, etc. Currently, Firefox and Safari are not supported.

Before you can use Ledger Nano with Pera, you need to set up your Ledger Nano following the instructions you received with the device. Then, download Ledger Live and install the Algorand App.

If this is your first time using Pera Web, you’ll see the following options:

Select Import from Nano Ledger. You’ll be asked to set a passcode - this encrypts your accounts locally on the current device and browser, and is used to lock and unlock your wallet. You can then proceed through the Connect to Ledger flow.

Resolving WalletConnect Issues

Unfortunately there are several known issues related to WalletConnect that our team is working on. Some of these issues are related to the WalletConnect JavaScript implementation on the dApp side. Even though these are not problems with our iOS and Android apps, we are working with ecosystem partners to try and solve the implementation issues on their side so our users can have a smoother experience using Pera Wallet.

This article offers some workarounds to most common problems we've seen based on incoming support requests and our internal testing.

Resetting WalletConnect Sessions

The most common case with WalletConnect problems is stale sessions that need to be cleared out. Whenever you experience a WalletConnect problem, we recommend disconnecting all active WalletConnect sessions. You can easily do this by navigating to Settings > WalletConnect Sessions > Disconnect All Sessions. After doing this, make sure to reload the browser tab where you loaded the dApp as well, and try connecting again.

Issues Connecting on iOS with Mobile Safari

One of the most common problems with WalletConnect happens on iOS devices, when using a dApp such as AlgoFi, Tinyman, Yieldly, Algogems and attempting to connect on Mobile Safari. After a successful connection, when you return to Safari to use the dApp, WalletConnect socket connection fails and you get stuck.

Pera Web Wallet

Pera Web Wallet is a non-custodial browser-based wallet for buying, sending and storing crypto on the Algorand blockchain.

Pera Web allows you to manage Algorand accounts from the browser by encrypting the accounts' private keys locally on your device. This means your Web Wallet only exists on the specific browser you create it on (eg. Safari, Chrome), on the specific device (eg. laptop, desktop computer) you create it on.

You do not provide any identifying credentials (eg. a username or an email address) when creating a Pera Web Wallet - instead, you will be asked to create a "passcode". This is like the password you might use to log in to your computer or laptop, or like the passcode you use to unlock your phone. The passcode is not known to anything other than the device and browser you create it on - it cannot unlock your Web Wallet on a different computer, a friend's laptop, or even in a different browser.

This is the same behaviour as the Pera Wallet Mobile App: neither your phone passcode or your Pera Mobile-specific passcode would unlock your wallet on a friend's phone. Equally, if you get a new phone one day, you will find that the Pera Mobile App does not automatically know who you are, or recover your accounts automatically. Your phone or Pera Mobile passcodes do not contain the information required to recover your Algorand accounts. This behaviour is the same on Web. Recover or Import an Algorand Account with Recovery Passphrase

This tutorial will allow you to recover or import an Algorand account using its 24 or 25-word recovery passphrase. Before we begin, please get your 25-word passphrase ready.

How to back up your Recovery Passphrase

|| It is extremely important to securely back up your 24 or 25-word recovery passphrase for each Algorand account you create. Your passphrase is the only way to regain access to your account if you logout from the App, get a new phone or laptop, or lose access to your wallet in any way.

Before you start, ensure you have a basic understanding of:

How the blockchain works
What an Algorand account is

Let's say that you find yourself in one of the following situations:

◾️ You drop your phone or laptop and it gets destroyed ◾️ Your phone or computer is stolen or lost ◾️ Your Pera Wallet app gets deleted from your phone ◾️ Your browser cache gets wiped ◾️ You change your preferred browser on your computer ◾️ You forget your PIN or passcode for Pera Wallet ◾️ You've memorized the recovery passphrase but one day you wake up and can't remember it!

**If you don't have your 24 or 25-word recovery passphrase securely stored, you will lose access to all your accounts and their funds. While these situations may seem unlikely, they happen frequently and could happen to you. The good news is, if you have your 24 or 25-word passphrase, you will be able to regain access to the associated account.
