Create or Upgrade to a Quantum Account on Pera Wallet
Before You Begin
Make sure you are familiar with Algorand and the concept of Algorand Accounts.
Key points:
- Pera Wallet is a container for your Algorand Accounts
- Pera Wallet allows you to create and manage Algorand Accounts, but the accounts exist on the blockchain, not "on Pera"
- Pera Wallet is a non-custodial wallet. Any accounts created using Pera remain your responsibility and Pera cannot help you if you lose access to your accounts.
If you already have an account on the Algorand Blockchain and want to bring it up to date instead of creating a new one, see Rekeying an Existing Account to a Quantum Account below.
What Is a Quantum Account?
A Quantum Account is a regular Algorand Account secured with FALCON-1024, a post-quantum signature scheme. It works exactly like any other account in Pera, you can hold assets, send and receive, and connect to dApps, but it's signed using cryptography built to hold up against future quantum computers, not just today's.
A few things worth knowing before you create one:
- It's optional. Your existing accounts are not affected in any way. Quantum Accounts are an additional account type you can choose to use, alongside your regular accounts.
- It still uses a recovery passphrase. A new Quantum Account gets its own 25-word recovery phrase, the same way a legacy 25 account does. Store it the same way you'd store any other seed phrase.
- A Quantum Account is not the same account as a Legacy account, even from the same phrase. If you generate a Quantum Account and a Legacy account from the same recovery phrase, they are two different accounts with two different addresses. Creating a Quantum Account does not upgrade or replace an existing account unless you specifically rekey it (see below).
Creating a New Quantum Account on Pera Mobile
- Click the plus symbol at the top of your accounts list on the Portfolio Slider
- Select Add Quantum Account
- Follow the steps to view and store your recovery passphrase. Consult Backing Up Your Recovery Passphrase for more details. You'll need to store it during this process, as you will be asked to prove you know it by providing a few of the words at specific positions.
- Name your account. This name is more like a nickname and it only applies on your phone, it will never be used on the blockchain or on any other wallet or website.
- Your new Quantum Account is ready to use, visible in your Home Screen alongside your other accounts. You can fund it using the Buy/Sell button, or explore the rest of the Algorand ecosystem via the Discover tab.
Rekeying an Existing Account to a Quantum Account
If you already have an account you use regularly and would rather upgrade it than start fresh, you can rekey it to Quantum signatures instead. Rekeying keeps your existing address, asset holdings, and dApp connections exactly as they are, only the signing method changes underneath.
- Open the account you'd like to upgrade
- Click the More button
- Select Rekey to Standard Account and select a Quantum Account
- Confirm the rekey transaction
Once complete, that account signs future transactions using Quantum signatures, while keeping the same address and history it always had.
A Note on dApp Compatibility
Quantum Accounts are new, and not every dApp has upgraded to support post-quantum transactions yet. Because of this, the first time you connect a Quantum Account through WalletConnect, Pera will show you a short warning explaining that:
- Some dApps may not yet fully support Quantum Accounts
- Transactions could fail, or come with different fees than usual, on dApps that haven't upgraded
- You can continue anyway, or switch to a standard account for full compatibility in the meantime
If you run into an issue with a specific dApp, reaching out to that dApp directly and letting them know you'd like to see Quantum Account support can help speed things along. This is expected and normal this early. Support across the ecosystem will grow over time.
Remember:
- Every account you create, Quantum or otherwise, has its own recovery passphrase. These seed phrases must be stored individually; each one only grants access to one Algorand Account.
- A Quantum Account and a Legacy account generated from the same recovery phrase are different accounts with different addresses. Rekeying is the only way to bring an existing account's address into Quantum signatures.
- Pera Wallet is a non-custodial, self-custody wallet. This means only you have control of your account. Pera cannot help you if you lose access.
