Cloud Backups - Backing up and Restoring your Entire Wallet

Cloud Backup keeps an encrypted copy of your Pera accounts, contacts and passkeys, so you can restore them on a new phone or keep several devices in sync. Everything is encrypted on your device before it is uploaded, using two backup credentials that only you hold.

How Cloud Backup works and what it protects

Cloud Backup is a real-time backup solution in which all the data on your wallet is encrypted on your device using state of the art encryption (e.g. AES-256-GCM and argon2). The encrypted data files are then uploaded to a server where they are stored against your backup ID. Only your device, or any device you restore the backup to, can decrypt those files. Pera Wallet has no way to recover your lost credentials or access your data...ever.

The uploaded data includes:

  • Accounts you created or imported in Pera, including the keys needed to use them, so you don't need to restore each account individually.
  • Watch accounts and Ledger accounts. For Ledger accounts only the address is backed up; your keys stay on your Ledger device.
  • Shared (multisig) accounts, including their participants and threshold.
  • Contacts: names and addresses. Contact photos are not backed up.
  • Passkeys that Pera can re-create from a Universal Wallet's recovery passphrase. Passkeys made another way stay on the device they were created on.
  • Your preferences: currency, language, and other preferences you have selected.

Your two backup credentials

When you set up Cloud Backup, Pera gives you two credentials. You need both to restore your backup on a device that isn't already synced. The idea with giving you two credentials is as a form of Multi-factor Authentication (MFA). We recommend storing these two pieces of information in different places.

Credential

What it is

How to keep it

Passphrase

12 words generated for your backup. This is not the recovery passphrase of any of your accounts.

Write it down and store it safely, just like you do for your 24 word recovery phrases. Pera never saves it for you.

Encryption Key

A long code that unlocks your backup together with the Passphrase.

To simplify access, Pera can save this as a file on your device, in Apple iCloud or in Google Drive if you choose.

These credentials cannot be recovered if you lose them. Pera cannot reset them for you. Keep the Passphrase and the Encryption Key in different places, and never share either one.

How to turn on Cloud Backup

  1. Open Settings and tap Cloud Backup.
  2. Read the introduction and tap Continue.
  3. Tap Set Up a new Cloud Backup.
  4. Write down your 12-word Passphrase. Screenshots are blocked on this screen. Tick Yes, I stored my Passphrase and tap Proceed.
  5. Confirm the Passphrase by choosing the correct word for each of the three positions shown. If you pick a wrong word, new positions are drawn and you try again.
  6. On Store your Encryption Key, choose where to save it: Store Locally, Apple iCloud (iPhone only) or Google Drive. Wait for Encryption Key stored.
  7. Tick Yes, I stored my Encryption Key and tap Enable Cloud Backup now.
  8. Confirm with your Pera PIN or biometrics. You'll see Cloud Backup enabled.

Settings now shows Cloud Backup as On. If you leave before step 8, nothing is backed up and you'll need to start again.

Where your Encryption Key is saved

  • Apple iCloud: in Pera's folder in iCloud Drive, visible in the Files app.
  • Google Drive: in a folder called Pera Wallet. Pera can only see files it created in your Drive.
  • Store Locally: wherever you choose in the save dialog.

The file is named pera-backup- followed by five characters, for example pera-backup-ABCDE.json.

Checking that your backup is working

Open Settings > Cloud Backup. The Latest Sync row shows when Pera last synced and whether it was SUCCESS, FAILED or still SYNCING. Below it you'll see how many accounts, contacts and passkeys are in sync, and how many are not backed up yet.
Pera syncs while the app is open and unlocked: a few seconds after any change, and every five minutes while it stays open.

Is my backup secure?

Your data is encrypted on your device before it leaves it, using your Passphrase and Encryption Key. Pera stores only the encrypted backup on its servers and never has your Passphrase, so Pera cannot open your backup. The setup and credential screens block screenshots.
Cloud Backup is a convenience on top of self-custody, not a replacement for it. We still recommend keeping your accounts' recovery passphrases safe, as described in Backing up your Recovery Passphrase.
